Tom Mortensen Hi, my name is Tom. I was born on the 29th of April 1971 in Denmark. I grew up in a small town in Jylland (the only part on Denmark that is not a island). At the age of 19 I moved to Copenhagen to study at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU). I got my masters degree after eight years (in the fall of 1998). In theory a masters in Denmark takes 5 to 6 years, but I was working at the same time, so it took a little longer (see below).

The primary focus of my studies was high-speed digital hardware, both at the board level (GHz PCB's) and in transmission systems (SDH, ATM, ...).

For my masters thesis I wanted to try something else, and I did a feasibility study of the use of wavelets (a class of mathematical functions used in signal analysis, image processing etc.) for real-time visualization of large terrain models (>GB). I had never worked in the area of computer graphics before (and don't plan to ever again).

Since 1992 I have had several different jobs. From 1992 to 1994 I worked for Damec Research A/S. Damec was small company that was focused on aerospace medicine related research. I worked on a number of experiments that flew on the Space Shuttle in 1993 (STS-55). In addition to supporting our own experiments, we also performed the astronaut training for several other experiments. During this time I spent a total of 4 months in the US (in Texas at Johnson Space Center, and Florida, at Kennedy Space Center).

This was a very exiting time, but I had to quit this job if I was ever going to get my masters degree. In 1994 I worked as a PC software instructor (DOS/Windows and OS/2), but after 6 months I was offered a job at IBM. I worked at IBM Denmark from 1994 until I graduated in the fall of 98. The first two years I handled the support on PC desktop and servers to all the Danish IBM dealers. In 1996 that department was moved to Ireland, so I got a new job at IBM, working with "large customer support" (banks, insurance companies etc.). Here I got the chance to work with a number of products, including OS/2, ADSM, NVDM and Lotus Notes.

After graduating I started my own company together with a couple of friends, developing software used to control CNC machines. This software is sold worldwide through another company. Today I'm working on a wide range of software products for the manufacturing industry (see here).
